Is it really safe to use rectal irrigation?
After assessment and teaching by a qualified healthcare professional, irrigation is a simple and effective treatment with minimal risks. Irrigation is regarded as an invasive procedure as there will be a cone tip or catheter placed into the rectum through the anal canal. Therefore, if done incorrectly there is a risk of damage to the bowel, including perforation, therefore assessment and teaching with follow up is important to minimise the risk. This will be explained to you by your healthcare professional during your assessment.
