Rectal irrigation assists the bowel to clear stool contents using only water. It can help soften stool and reach higher than the rectum to promote timely and effective bowel clearance. Suppositories can help soften stool but can cause some irritation after using and does not guarantee to fully clear the rectum. Manual evacuation not only takes time to do but again does not guarantee to fully clear the rectum. It can reduce the integrity of the muscles in the anal canal and rectum by repeatedly having to insert a finger to remove faeces.
