Rectocele

A rectocele is a bulge of the front wall of the rectum into the back wall of the vagina.

The tissue between the rectum and the vagina can become thin and weak over time, resulting in a rectocele. When rectoceles are small, most women have no symptoms.

Causes

It is not exactly known as to what may cause a rectocele. However, weakening of the pelvic floor as part of becoming older and after menopause, multiple vaginal births, use of forceps, and tearing with a vaginal delivery can contribute. Chronic constipation and excessive straining with bowel movements are also thought to play a role.

Symptoms

These may occur either in the vagina or the rectum.

Symptoms in vagina:

  • Vaginal bulging

  • Sensation of a lump in the vagina

  • Pain during intercourse

  • Feeling of something hanging out of the vagina

Symptoms in rectum:

If you observe any of the above symptoms, seek medical help from your doctor.
